Risking redundancy, we revisit an ongoing event. Music at Noon is a gem, and the most recent was an exquisite example.
Music at Noon is a performance — every Wednesday during the school year, starting at 12:15 — by various members of the YSU Dana School of Music’s faculty and students, at the Butler Institute of American Art, conveniently right across the street from Bliss Hall. Each presentation is free, and casual, and lasts about 45 minutes in the museum’s main hall.
The Butler is one of Youngstown’s proud treasures, and any excuse to visit there is a good one. For instance, in addition to the local musical talent, the 72nd annual exhibition of the area’s best artists is currently on display, among several permanent and visiting shows.
The musical talent on Feb. 11 was a Dana faculty jazz trio. Pianist Nathan Douds performed some of his original, free-form jazz works, accompanied by faculty members Dave Morgan on bass and Glenn Shaft on drums.
Doud, a past graduate of the Dana percussion program, is a big-time player, but the students who made up a sizable percentage of the audience shook their heads in wonder, awed by the skill of their teachers.
Next up, Dana percussion ensembles. Pack a lunch to munch and listen.
