  • They use a classic ‘Cuda for their promo pics and call themselves a premier garage band, but the Classic Cruisers are not head nut heads. They’re  just a bunch of guys who rediscovered the joy of their youth and are (rockin’ and) rollin’ with it.

The name is recent, but their roots go back to Immaculate Conception Elementary in 1966, when Mike Herchick (bass/guitar), Jim DeCapua (drums) and Joe Warino (rhythm guitar/vocals) started trying to make music.

They managed to complete “Gloria” at their first stage show the next year — “We started and ended together,” they state proudly — and that’s still their (tongue-in-cheek) goal and their signature song, though their repertoire has expanded considerably.

Real life (read high school graduation) pulled them apart, but they kept in touch. In 2004, Herchick — then principal of Mogadore HS — thought it might be fun if the principal played at Class Day, so he called them together and the rest is the present.

Stephen DeCapua joined them on lead guitar in 2005, vocalist ‘Sonny’ Rich Dudones came on board in ’06 and they added keyboardist Jim Cerinelli this year.

“We didn’t really have a name the first couple years we got back together,” says Jim DeCapua. “When we played in Mogadore, we called ourselves The Mogadores, but when we got a gig at Irish Bob’s Pub, we had to come up with something for the billboard.”

Now they practice once a week — in DeCapua’s basement studio which they share with his son’s band, Jones For Revival — and play 3-4 times a month, mostly outdoors in the summer. In addition to a wide range of rock, R&B and etc., they do an Elvis set in costume.

“We’re having fun,” DeCapua explains, “and as long as we’re having fun we’ll keep on rockin’.”
