Chris Coles has a cool internship. The senior jazz student at YSU’s Dana School of Music has a regular, every other week gig at Five Points Wine & Bar in Poland.
Like every other Dana student, Coles is following the dictum that experience is the best teacher, so he plays his alto and tenor saxophones in various bands. This Wednesday evening gig is a duo with bassist Tim Wilderoder.
Coles is currently finishing a music education degree and he expects to return to his home in Cleveland and teach for a day job after graduating. He is attending YSU on a Leonardi Scholarship.
“I want to establish myself as a player, then a writer, and then move to a big city where jazz pays,” says the talented and ambitious student. For this lounge type stint, he mostly sticks to jazz classics.
